The landscape is a storyteller. It narrates past ages and upcoming futures, human interventions, symbioses, and turning points, relationships and processes, inscribed in the bodies and memories of plants, soil, animals, stones, and humans.
The exhibition “Instances” by landscape architect Fanny Brandauer displays set pieces from an engagement with landscape spanning four years: fragments, excerpts, instances from more than ten ongoing and completed works and collaborations.
The protagonist of the exhibition is the landscape itself – and the question of how it may be perceived, engaged with and presented. In doing so, Brandauer has brought together many different voices to work with her on, in and about landscape – and just as many formats. Concepts of landscape are not illustrated, but communicated on several levels: as texture, sound, taste, smell, memory. With them, the focus shifts to sensuous perception. The individual stations are experimental approaches: footnotes and traces of human and more-than-human actors, atmospheres and places. “Instances” moves around the peripheries and in unexplored territory, where boundaries between disciplines are fluid. In doing so, it invites us to understand landscape not simply as reserve, backdrop or resource, but as a complex, living network of relationships.
